18 YEARS OF NRI INSTITUTE
The NRI Institute - a NGO of Indians, Non-Resident Indians and Persons of Indian Origin, registered with the Government - was founded in the year 1989. It aims to keep Indians informed about the achievements and problems of Pravasi Indians through conferences, seminars, symposia and exchange of visits of delegations; to keep NRIs / PIOs well informed about socio-political, socio-economic and cultural events in India and promote their interest in the heritage of India, by bringing out a fortnightly Newsletter, proper communication and media coverage; to establish a forum for the Indians living in India and abroad to get together and cultivate spirit of brotherhood and to share the achievements, successes and brilliance in their chosen field of work and to familiarize the people in India with the same.
The Institute, over the years, has established Chapters in the UK, USA, Canada, Angola, UAE, Oman, Bangkok, Seychelles, Singapore, Switzerland, Australia, Saudi Arabia, and Madagascar and so far has organized 34 International Events, 18 in India, 10 in London, 2 in Dubai and one each in Detroit, New York, Bangkok, Singapore besides several successful symposia on specific issues from time to time at the National and International level.
Eighteen International Conferences of Indian and Non-Resident Indians have been held in India (17 in New Delhi and one in Mumbai). Prominent leaders who addressed included former Presidents of India Giani Zail Singh and Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Ministers Shri P. V. Narsimha Rao, Shri Chandrashekhar, Shri H.D. Deve Gowda, Shri I. K. Gujral, Shri Pranab Mukherji, shri Shivraj Patil, Shri Arjun Singh, Smt. Meira Kumar, Shri S. B. Chavan, Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad, Shri R. L. Bhatia, Shri Salman Khurshid, Shri Vasant Sathe, Shri V. C. Shukla, Shri Digvijay Singh, Shri M. Arunachalam, Shri Ram Jethmalani, Smt. Sheila Dikshit, Dr. Farooq Abdulla, Shri Bhajan Lal and Shri Hiteshwar Saikia, Shri Pawan Chemling. Shri L. K. Advani President, Bhartiya Janta Party addressed Delegates of the first Conference, besides British High Commissioners to India H.E. Sir David Gore Booth, Sir Rob Young and Sir Michael Arthur addition to the Secretaries of the various Ministries and the Governor of the Reserve Bank, and Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes. |
